Researching my own institution – a quick review
I’m quite familiar with research methods – I mean hopefully so because I’ve been teaching the MA students at the Fashion Business School on their Research Proposal unit this term. Definitely more of a qualitative person that a quantitative person, anything to avoid the dreaded SPSS. However, I can’t say I’ve ever particularly considered conducting research in my own institution v another institution. Duna’s session was a great introduction to the benefits and drawbacks of both insider and external research within an institution. I think highlighting these key elements will directly inform my next piece of research. A discussion involving informed consent was interesting as this is something that regularly gets asked to our team so I considered whether it is in actual fact a question that should be asked to the research staff rather than IP?
Object based learning – a quick review
This session on object based learning was an interesting on because it is something completely new to me. The museum and archive world is foreign to me so it was intriguing to discover new things and get some great examples from Georgina and Jacqueline. At the beginning of the session I struggled to see how these examples that they were sharing with us were relevant to my work in IP but by the end I had some ideas of what I could test out and the microteach session was a great place to do this.
Data stories – a quick review
The donut definitely drew me in! I was again intrigued in the onset of this session because I didn’t know anything about the data that UAL had on the students and what we could learn from this. The session started with a rather chaotic word search with everyone on the session scrambling to write on the digital slides from home. Jheni and Siobhan have great energy and I felt a good vibe throughout the session (although it would have been even better in real life with real donuts). I explored the UAL data sets and thought about how this might inform my future work. I also considered this data in relation to my own experiences as a student at LCF and how the lack of masters funding in the UK for home students might impact others education, it was great that Jheni was also in HH that day so I could follow up in real life conversation with her after the session.
